The Role of Basic Karate
By Andreas Weinberger                                      Monday, 27 September 2010

Karate is a way of life; if we choose to go along this way. It will give you an important stepping stone in life, not just in Karate but in our every day life in which we live today.

The role of basic Karate, I believe, is to keep mind and body in balance, it increases your flexibility strength, endurance, and it will give you a better state of mind. As with a lot of sports you need to know your basics to build a good foundation for your development.
As we all know, we have to learn how to walk first, before we start to run.

Karate has a lot of different styles but their Basic’s are to 90% the same .Most of them  will have slight variations in the way  they are using  the basic’s in relations to combination but the Basic Punch or Block / Kick and stances will be the same.
A good Martial artist will know all the basics and will use lots of different combinations to defeat his or her opponent .A lot of non Martial artist will say, practicing the basic karate is boring due to the endless repetitions of blocks and punches.

Because all of or most of the Karate moves, are not a natural behavior if a Human is under threat or while attacked. It takes a lot to convince your brain to react in a certain way, if you should be in a situation in which you would use your skills. It takes for the average person around a 1000 repetitions to memorize a simple punch or block. To make your body react with in a split second with a move which is not natural for it, means in not so many words a lot of hard work and detection. A lot of Martial artist form other styles like Brazilian Ju Jutzu /Kung fu/ Judo just to name a few, will tell you that the traditional karate is not the strongest in the world of Martial arts for self defense, I would not disagree, but having sad all of this, I believe that the basic Karate plays a most important role in Martial arts as we know it today. Practicing the basics like our blocks and punches over and over again will ensure you but these moves in to your sub conscious mind and want forget them in a moment of truth.

As I mentioned earlier, going the path of a Martial artist also will set your mind in to a different level of awareness. I would say it gets you in a state of ever readiness without being paranoid, it will teach you to not underestimate your opponents .It lets you control your bodies’ natural fear and react quickly and controlled when needed.

If you look at the traditional karate 20 years ago, it was nothing like the Karate today.
In the olden days you had to defend with a shortened block to a shortened punch, we still have the same blocks and punches Kicks and so on, but we use them in a manner of you can’t be wrong if your successfully defend your self against a kick or a punch. The modern karate has evolved in to a mixed martial arts with a lot of different styles combined, which makes it more versatile, and I believe much better for self defense.
But in my eyes the best self defense is still to avoid situations, which could cause trouble.

The main basics in Karate are still the Katas; each major style of karate has innumerable katas which are designed to reflect the basic elements of that style. Within each style there are also groupings of related katas that share a similar structure and focus on a specific set of skills. Within these groupings, and within the style as a whole, there is usually a well- defined progression from one kata or group of katas to the next. We are taught katas in order to help as build upon and enhance their basic skill.

When we first become a karate students, we are introduced to a whole set of new skills. We are taught basic techniques, but we need a training structure to learn how to use them effectively. Katas are an important part of helping us to develop our first awareness of how the techniques we are learning can be used in a fight. Later, as we rise through their school ranks, the katas can become more elaborate to meet the growing need to challenge us and to improve our skills.

Finally, kata training strengthens the mind as well as the body, because we must focus our minds to remember the katas, lest they be forgotten

Martial arts are designed to help us acquire skills useful in self- defense. The single most fundamental idea of karate is that a single blow should finish the opponent. Kata training, along with training in basics and sparring, helps us move ever closer to this objective. However, an extremely important point is that the ultimate purpose of training is to offer a means of developing a healthy body and a strong character. Kata, with its richness and diversity, is a powerful tool that can help us in our ongoing efforts to reach our goals.
